The Adonis cocktail dates back to 1884 and represents the evolution happening behind American bars as both classic imported and recently discovered wines began to be incorporated in new ways. It is thought to have been created at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.
It was named in honor of the longest running Broadway show of its time. Adonis was a burlesque musical that tells the story of a gorgeous male statue that comes to life and finds human ways so unpleasant that he chooses to turn back to stone.
1 ½ oz Amontillado Sherry
1 ½ oz Sweet Vermouth
4 dashes Orange Bitters
Stir/Strain into Coupe. Garnish with Lemon Peel.
