Despite a long list of legendary stories of creation, no one actually knows who invented the Manhattan. Most agree that it was born in the city of Manhattan and many experts think it can be traced to a legendary bartender of the mid 1800’s simply known as ‘Black’. In the 1870’s the drink was made popular by the Manhattan Club in New York City, a prominent social club that lasted over 100 years only to close its doors in 1979. The traditional recipe for a Manhattan calls for rye whiskey, but it can also be made with bourbon or Canadian whiskey.
